Every betting strategy discussion eventually hits the same question, and it is not which team to pick. It is how much to stake. Two approaches dominate serious bankroll management: flat betting, where you risk the same unit on every wager, and the Kelly Criterion, where your stake scales with your estimated edge. Neither creates an edge by itself — but the wrong choice of staking plan can quietly destroy a good one.

This guide compares both methods honestly: how each works, where each shines, where each breaks down, and which one fits your situation.

Flat betting is built on one principle: stake the same unit on every selection. With a $5,000 bankroll and a 1 percent unit of $50, every bet is $50 — whether the play looks like a strong edge or a marginal one. Some bettors use a fixed percentage of their current bankroll instead, which scales stakes up and down automatically, but the core idea is identical: consistency over cleverness.

The strengths are practical. Flat staking is simple to follow, keeps you emotionally in check, and makes performance easy to evaluate — your results reflect your picking skill, not your sizing decisions. A losing streak cannot wipe you out because no single bet is oversized, and you never need to estimate win probabilities to decide a stake. Its weakness is efficiency: it ignores edge size entirely, betting the same amount on a razor-thin value play as on your strongest position.

The Kelly Criterion takes the opposite philosophy: vary the stake according to the estimated edge. Its classic formula for a single bet is f = (bp − q) / b, where f is the fraction of bankroll to stake, b is the decimal odds minus one, p is your estimated probability of winning, and q is 1 − p. The bigger your perceived edge, the bigger the stake; a small edge means a small stake; no edge means no bet at all.

Kelly is mathematically designed to maximize long-term bankroll growth while keeping risk of ruin in check — when the inputs are right. That ‘when’ carries the whole debate. The formula is only as good as your probability estimate, and most bettors overestimate their edge. Feed Kelly an overstated edge and it will confidently recommend stakes far larger than your bankroll can survive, turning a small estimation error into a large drawdown.

Side by side, the trade-off is clear. Flat betting offers simplicity, stable risk per bet, and immunity to estimation errors — at the cost of ignoring edge size and growing the bankroll more slowly. Full Kelly offers theoretically optimal growth and efficient use of strong edges — at the cost of high volatility, complex probability estimates, and severe punishment for overconfidence.

In practice, experienced bettors rarely run full Kelly. The common compromise is fractional Kelly — typically half or quarter Kelly — which keeps the edge-responsive sizing while taming the volatility. A bettor estimating a 5 percent edge at even odds might see full Kelly suggest around 5 percent of bankroll; half-Kelly cuts that to 2.5 percent, a far more survivable number when the estimate is even slightly optimistic.

For most bettors, the honest answer starts with flat betting. If you are still developing your handicapping, do not have calibrated probability estimates, or simply want a durable baseline, flat stakes of 1 to 3 percent of bankroll are a clean, professional approach. You give up some theoretical growth; you gain protection against your own errors, which is worth far more.

Consider Kelly — fractional Kelly, specifically — only when you track every bet, calculate your own probabilities, and can point to a record showing your estimates are actually accurate. And whatever you choose, avoid the Martingale system of doubling after losses: it is the staking plan that looks invincible until the one losing streak that ends the bankroll. Staking plans manage risk; they never manufacture edge. Keep stakes affordable, review your results monthly, and let the quality of your numbers — not the size of your bets — do the talking.
