Shots on target betting turns a football match into a question about one player: will he test the goalkeeper often enough? The market usually asks for a line like over or under 1.5 shots on target for a striker, or 0.5 for a midfielder. The prices look simple, but the underlying numbers are noisy, and a few habits separate a thoughtful player-prop bet from a guess on a famous name.

Start with role, not reputation. A striker playing as a lone forward in a possession team takes more shots than the same player deployed wide or in a deeper role. Check the player's shots and shots-on-target averages over the last eight to ten starts, split by position, and ignore season totals that blend different roles. A winger who cuts inside and shoots will out-produce a winger who stays wide and crosses, even if their headline goal totals look similar.

Team context shapes the numbers as much as the player does. A side that dominates possession creates more shooting chances, but a side that counter-attacks can give its striker fewer, higher-quality looks. Set pieces add another layer: a player on free-kick or penalty duty gets extra attempts that a non-taker never sees, and penalty duty alone can lift a player's shots-on-target average by a full shot per match.

Reading the line is a numbers exercise. If a striker averages 1.8 shots on target per start, the over 1.5 line is a coin flip at best, and the price needs to be generous to be worth it. If he averages 2.6 against weak defences but 1.1 against top-six sides, the fixture, not the average, should drive your decision. Look for a gap of at least half a shot between the player's relevant average and the line before you commit, and compare the price across bookmakers, because player-prop margins are wider than match-result margins.

The pitfalls are specific to props. Line-up news is decisive: a late change that moves your player to a different position, or drops him to the bench, can destroy a bet before kick-off, so check confirmed teams whenever the market allows it. Some bookmakers void player bets if the player does not start, while others settle on any appearance — know which rule applies before you bet. And resist the urge to stack several player props from the same match into one accumulator: they are correlated, because one team's dominance lifts all its attackers together, so a single bad match wipes out the whole ticket.

Used selectively, shots-on-target betting rewards the bettor who studies roles and fixtures rather than names. Pick one or two players you follow closely, track their numbers honestly, and bet only when the line and the price both agree with your read.
